I am sure Mr. Miller wrote it meaning to suggest a Catholic like church

is what X said. And so is pretty much everyone else sure that Mr. Miller meant to suggest a Catholic-like church. So really, since no novelists suggest anything with their literary creations and metaphors except those that are thing-like, why doesn't it settle the discussion?

It's about "a Catholic-like church," all agree. It's not about the Catholic church -- because of course if fifty novelists set out to write fifty novels about "the" Catholic church, they would on scrutiny turn out to be about fifty different churches with the same name.

The Catholic church, iow, isn't "the" Catholic church. But it's close enough so we're able to use the phrase and not confuse the entity being discussed with the Mennonite Central Committee. Mr. Miller didn't mean to suggest a Mennonite-like church.

As usual, I haven't read many of the posts about this, so possibly this has already been said.
