DJ EMEA PC Shipments/Dataquest-3:H-P,Compaq Integration Risk
Gammage said the rise in Germany is in the region of 12% to 13%, according to the preliminary figures, compared with a 15% fall in the third quarter of 2001.
"Despite the fact that growth is strong, the marker is still down on two years ago," Gammage said.
Dataquest said corporate demand for PCs remains stagnant, with no indications that a replacement cycle is starting or about to start.
Dataquest's figures show commercial channel inventory levels didn't increase during the quarter as a result of new controls put in place by Hewlett-Packard Inc. (HPQ), but retail inventories in many countries are running at the higher end of normal levels.
Western Europe accounts for around 70% of EMEA shipments, with France, Germany and the U.K. accounting for 50% of overall EMEA shipments.
H-P remained the largest vendor of PCs in EMEA with a 18.5% market share, compared with 19.4% a year earlier. Gammage said Dell Computer Corp. (DELL), which increased its market share to 9.2% from 8.8%, is eating into H-P's markets as it digests its acquisition of Compaq Computer.
Gammage said H-P's performance in the third quarter was strong, "but the period of truth will be over the next six months."
He expressed concern regarding the integration with Compaq over the next six months, adding there is a risk it won't be complete in Europe before Nov. 1 deadline.
