Well, let's see. Using Catholic church in its broad sense to include the schismatic offshotts, as far as I know, the Catholic Church is the only church to have a Pope. Certainly when one says "the Pope" one means the Catholic Church and none other. The church in the book had Popes.

The Catholic Church is the only major church, and maybe the only church, to canonize saints. The church in the book canonized saints.

There are other points in common, but those will do for starters.

But of course, it could be not the Catholic Church. After all, we have no way absolutely to prove that the United States of America that we know today is the same United States that is talked about in any book that talks about the United States of America. Or that if a book mentions England it's the same country we think of as England and not referring to what we today would call Madagascar.

If it walks like a duck, and quacks like a duck, it could still be a tiger, but you'll win more bets if you bet it's a duck.
