I agree with that, too, though I'd rewrite the sentence, for myself, with one word changed:

I do think that the flame of virtue is based on a steadfast desire to leave the world better off for having inhabited it, and that that is based on a love of the world, and a concern for that portion one effects......

The reason I'd change "of creation" to "of the world" is that though many personify the forces that have created our world, I don't. I wouldn't need to change it; 'creation' would work in my sense, too; but it's the world I love, and not the process by which it was created, which, though tautologically necessary, is one that is predicated on suffering.
