Manger made the disclosure at a news conference attended by Montgomery County Police Chief Charles Moose and Mike Bouchard of federal Bureau of Tobacco, Alcohol and Firearms. The officers belong to the special task force assigned to investigate the sniper shooting spree, which has taken nine lives and injured two in a span of two weeks in northern Virginia, suburban Maryland and Washington D.C. The cream-colored van was identified by a witness who came forward after the sniper shooting that killed FBI analyst Linda Franklin of Arlington Monday night at a Home Depot parking lot in Fairfax, Va. Manger also said that investigators also discounted as not credible and unreliable witnesses' descriptions of the suspect and the weapon used at the Home Depot shooting. He said about 30 different rifles can be used to fire a .223 caliber bullet, the ammunition used by the sniper. Montgomery Police Chief Moose said the task force had concluded a meeting, which he described as "beneficial" and allowed the group "to settle their differences" as it searches for the sniper. Moose said the task force meeting discussed strategies to catch the killer, but he stressed that the plans will be strictly kept confidential. Investigators have criticized recent news reports about witnesses' accounts concerning the sniper, the vehicle and rifle used, which, they said, are prone to taint the veracity of witnesses accounts.
