Muzzle velocity 3200 fps. Air friction slows the bullet (but not the sound). Call the bullet velocity an average of 2900 fps. Speed of sound in air, about 1000 fps. The difference is around 1900fps.

1900fps * 1.5 seconds = 2850 ft = 950 yards.

I think we can safely assume that they're wrong about that 1.5 seconds.
