I don't know if M1 carbine ammo and aK47 ammo are far apart. The rounds are roughly the same calibre and length. However the SKS rifle was often rechambered to take NATO ammunition which was much more available. Also the AK47 came in two flavours, the long cartridge, which is close to the nato 308 and the short which is close to the M1. The rechambered AK47's were used in Vietnam and much ammo was got off the battlefield, stolen and just plain bought off supply people.
