1. NEITHER M-1 the Garand or the Carbine used "NATO" ammo.
The Garand uses 30-06
The Carbine uses .30 Carbine (the shortest cartridge - often confused by the unknowing for an automatic pistol cartridge & yes it has been used in a very few pistols)
2. The "NATO" is a 7.62 NATO also known as a .308 Winchester. Overall Length 2.735"

3. 7.62X39 See (9)
Ctg. OAL 2.19"
ak-47.net

Thus unless the chamber of the AK-47 is 0.545 inches (more than 1/2 an inch) longer than the case length the bolt wouldn't even close fully on the .308(7.62 NATO).

This would be DANGEROUS if it is that much longer than the 7.62X39 ammo(as the bullet would have to jump that 1/2" in a chamber as large as case diameter - we're not just talking about a "free bore" condition where there is an unrifled barrel section) or DANGEROUS using the .308 if it were to fire before the bolt were fully closed!!!! Picture this hold any rifle up where it belongs for firing - right next to your face next, the brass can't hold during firing because it's expansion isn't checked by steel chamber & bits of (hot)brass are thrown into your eyes & face! In the other example the 7.62X39 bullet could partly turn inside the chamber become wedged into the barrel & when the next round is fired - KABOOM as the pressure from bullet 2 hits bullet 1 & the rifle barel explodes - again into your face eyes & this time it could cost youm your hand as well.

No worries, I measured the chamber of my SKS - also chambered in 7.62X39 & the chamber would never allow the fit of a .308 Winchester (only .18 or so longer than case at the sholder) . It would Never work!
