I agree with the practice of providing motherboards. I object to the practice of losing money while doing so.

Intel thought they could outsmart the memory vendors by ordering 4 times as many parts as they needed. In turn, the memory vendors ordered too much equipment and lost money. The ripple continued as the equipment makers saw their orders cancelled. Intel lost money, the memory people lost money, the equipment vendors hired too many people, and the consumer had to wait until the middle of this year for prices to finally come down.

Intel needs to drive the industry towards higher performance constantly to keep the megafabs running. If nobody trusts them, we'll go back to the serial method you described.
