Back in 1964 my next door neighbor sustained shrapnel wounds when his ship was attacked in the Gulf of Tonkin in Vietnam. My boyfriend was in Vietnam from 1971 to 1973 and we did NOT pull out until '74. That's ten years. As to the French, we did GIVE them Vietnam. Because of how Ho Chi Min had helped US troops during WWII, he was hoping to gain independence for his country. We betrayed that. The French had to fight opposition from the moment they came to reclaim what was now war booty. Early in the conflict, 1965 Johnson said we were going to bomb the heck out of Vietnam. By the end of his term as president he saw the seriousness of the mistake of invading Vietnam. Why did we go there? Because of the specter of Communism and the domino theory...one falls they all do?

We would have saved the Cambodians and Laotians? WHAT!!!!! We illegally invaded those countries and caused more problems for them than if we hadn't been there in the first place. We were there because of communism because of fear that if Vietnam fell t communism the rest of asia would as well. Well, we lost, and now you can go visit Vietnam if you wish. So we accomplished nothing other then getting thousands of Americans killed for NOTHING.
