Now you're morphed your argument from a lack of willingness to "fight", to a lack of willingness to "prepare to fight".
If so, I agree with you, but I don't agree that the lack has a damn thing to do with Verdun.
And you are still ignoring the simple fact that Germany is a hell of a lot bigger than France. Right now the CIA says Germany has a population of 83,251,851 (July 2002), while France is only 59,765,983.
It's true that France had Great Britain as an ally, but there were damn few British troops on the Continent, and both France and Britain had colonies all over the world to further dilute their power while Germany had none.
And I still haven't heard your explanation for why the Southerners turned tail and surrendered in masses to the Union during the Civil war. I thought Americans, unlike those pansy Frenchmen, were supposed to fight to the death.
