Just been reading the exchange of fire on the French Vietnam story. I'm glad to see some guys actually discuss it. It is a most important element of the story.

The close parallel with the British colonisation of America is an appropriate scenario. Why did the USA completely fall out of bed with Ho Chi Minh???

The commie story only carries so much weight. Fact was the Vietnam people wanted to rule thier own country. I am disgusted how the American government treated these people. They treated them like dirt the whole time. No democracy, no nothing.

however, South Vietnam, backed by the United States, refused to hold the elections. The reason was generally held to be that Ho’s popularity would have led to reunification under Communist rule. In succeeding years, Ho consolidated his government in the North.

Democracy, USA style, in action. Democracy is OK unless gangsters or the same ilk in power disagree with it. How putrid.

The USA got a lesson in Vietnam. Maybe they should learn from it.
