mtnlady... after I asked you that question I looked at your profile... and I was surprised to see an SV location! I just figured you were Denver or something, glad to hear you've relocated to a more scenic locale... :-)

I heard that PSFT was hiring for the first time in over a year. Although they were only hiring a handful of people in very selected areas.

I have heard the same about Beas. So this is consistent across the survivors although it hardly makes up for the losses (a wildcard is all the additions oracle and others are doing in Ireland and India for cost concerns, those come at the expense of US jobs)

If business doesn't pick up in the next year or so how many of the new start-ups do you think will be left?

I don't think there are any startups left at this point- well there certainly aren't any new ones being funded.

I also don't know when the employment picture will pick up in SV. A long, long time. People that could make a living here in say, 1994/95 timeframe I think are still employable. But if you are an editor for websites or in the parties/promotions area or doing something in the media covering the high tech industry... forget it. Sun is laying off another 5000 and where are they going to go. It makes software look like employment heaven.
