The Vietnamese wanted to be their own sovereign country after a hundred or so years under French rule. You know, like the USA wanted to be a sovereign country from the British.

I don't know what is so difficult to understand about this. The USA authorities would not even allow an election.

There is no "forcing" here. The Vietnamese had to fight the war with the USA where you lost and still you miss the message.
