No, I do not think so. The Vietnamese people wanted to rule their own country. EOS. After being treated like dirt by the French. The USA was not helping in this matter.

It came down to a test of will power.

I still think the USA could have played some smarts and had Ho Chi Minh on their side with some diplomatic moves. When the Commies in Russia and China cramped HCM's style he would have looked towards a friendly west. He cared about his country imho. Well, rather..I think... IMO, no need for humble.

/edit. Some of the best human beings I ever met were guys who fought in Vietnam. Unfortunately some of them have passed on now. Some of those guys who fought there, sometimes whacked on the first mission, others who somehow survived several missions, are just the bees knees. Ace guys.
