Separately, Lucent Technologies Inc. (NYSE:LU - News) announced plans for a reverse stock split that could boost its share price more than 20-fold. Analysts said a split would reduce the risk that if holders of Lucent's 8 percent convertible preferred stock maturing in 2031 force the telecommunications equipment provider to buy that stock back in August 2004, hedge funds might at that time drive Lucent's common shares close to zero by selling those shares "short."
