US involvement in Vietnam was not based on a desire to keep Vietnam from self rule.

I think the mistake occurred giving it back to France at the end of WW2.

[btw It's a tradition in this country never to forgive the French for anything. They are at fault on many matters -g- They think the same about us. The zero longitude meridian passing though Greenwhich instead of Paris is still a source of friction. The Frenchies still do not understand we are the center of the Universe..not them -lol-]
