I am no fan of colonies.

Having said that, I often wonder how the course of the history of the world would have been different if, instead of seizing colonies, European nations would have done something different, but I can't think what, exactly.

The enormous technological superiority of the Europeans juxtaposed with the simplicity of the rest of the world at a time when respect for the difference of others was non-existent . . . .

I can't come up with a good counterfactual.
