There was a great story in the NYT magazine a couple years ago about rifles made for BMG .50 cal. ammo and the people that shoot them. They were going for an effective range of 1 mile, though it took quiet early morning conditions in the desert to manage that. 6 or 7 seconds flight time at that range. At 100 meters or so, the round would pierce 1 or 2 inches of steel armor plate. Amusingly, one of the rifles mentioned came from a little company in a small town about 5 miles from where I live.

Not much of a hunting round unless the moose was inside a bunker or something. Have any moose been sighted wearing Kevlar lately?
