Telstra (Australia) EDGE???

The source of this clip is pretty reliable and extremely well sourced ... but by no means infallible, and he will be the first to tell you that:

EDGE is gaining momentum …The first operator outside of North and South America has now announced their intention to implement EDGE. Telstra’s General Manager of 3G Technology, Kevin Phillips, has confirmed the Australian operator will implement EDGE. Another first! Why? EDGE provides an increase in both speed and capacity over GPRS. Cost may be an issue in the business case analysis – especially if the underlying BTS infrastructure is not easily upgradeable (read older). But if the equipment is easily upgradeable, EDGE may make a great evolution option. In the end, terminal devices may be the key to EDGE success on a global basis. Unless devices are developed with multiple band and transport technologies as integral components, take up of the EDGE solution may wane…let’s see what develops!

The interesting thing here of course, is that Telstra is persistently mentioned as a potential prospect - one of the premier prospects - for overlaying GSM1X on their existing GSM network to supplement the rural coverage of their CDMA "Big Boomers" in the outback.

This appears to have been written 2 weeks ago, but just published.

Oh, yes.

The source?

I have not seen anything confirming.
