Deterrence worked with Stalin because he had a country decimated by WWII and we were the only ones with any substantial nuclear weaponry.

And Stalin, though not a poster boy for mental health, was not an adventurer. Neither were his successors. The analogy is flawed and ultimately silly. Saddam, on the other hand, is an inveterate maximalist who has proven time and time again that he has no conception of limits.

I firmly believe that the thinks he can control Western economies and snuff out Israel if he has nukes. They will, in his view, deter the US from taking action against him if he moves on the ME oil fields.
