Morale undoubtedly played a role. One site I read yesterday said that the Germans took a 70% casualty rate but kept coming. Most troops are willing to take about a 25% casualty rate before they run. Facing an enemy that tough has to be demoralizing. Also, they just were not ready and suffered because of it.
