I have a part-time employee from Viet Nam, a 22 year old accounting student. Her family immigrated a few years ago. I remember asking her once what her father did for a living here in the US. She said he was a stocker for Walmart.

A few months ago she expressed some interest in going full-time. When I asked why she would consider cutting back on her classes in order to work more, she said her family was hoping to buy a house and she was concerned her mother might be laid off her job. Unthinkingly, I said something to the effect that it was a shame her father made so little money.

"Oh, no!" she responded. "My dad, he make a LOT of money!"
