Karen, <The AMA finds anything out of its control "cruel". Do you see the tortures they condone inflicting on children that purport to be cancer cures. They rival nazis. >
Karen, Liam Williams-Holloway died from cancer a couple of years ago, because his stupid parents believed a charlatan with a magnetic mumbo-jumbo machine and decided to stop chemotherapy. They hid with Liam from the state when it decided to take possession of Liam and inject him with said chemicals. He was about 2 years old initially.
Yes, there is an element of Nazism there. The state decided for the parents and the child. However, torture is malevolent and while some chemotherapy is painful and nasty, it is not torture in the sense that you imply by associating it with the word Nazi.
Yes, the AMA likes control and I disagree that adults should have their decisions subject to AMA approval. Fraud and so on could be sorted out in court and charlatans prosecuted by proving fraud just as in other areas of life [such as Enron management].
If adults wish to use some dodgy recipe and die in the desperate attempt to live then that's up to them.
Where children are concerned, it's a bit more tricky. I'm not in favour of parents being allowed to destroy children with ignorance, but just how or where I'd draw the line, I don't know. I wouldn't want a 'food police' dictating ingredients in childrens' diets. But some things really do demand protection of children [such as featuring children in pornographic films or doing anything to them in any nasty way which is not in the child's long term interests]. It's an area fraught with problems.
For example I've always been a seat-belt fan, installing them in my first car long before the red-tape brigade had paid themselves a lot of money to make laws and have police going around bossing people about seat belts. But sometimes for some reason I might want to just leave a child asleep on the back seat, unrestrained while I drive somewhere. I don't want a damn dumb cop telling me that I'm not a safe parent and they'll take the child away from me for the tender care and attention of The State.
Our son would be dead without the skills of doctors [lymphoma 5 years ago]. So would my wife [melanoma]. So would our youngest [cervical ganglion neurofibroma]. So would I [pneumonia/asthma]. Yes, we could almost certainly have avoided all those hazards by knowing how to live, but that's the price of ignorance.
Having a State Authority dictating sun exposure limits, carpet styles, diets, hair bleaches and dyes would be suffocating. They'd probably get it wrong anyway, but make it wrong for everyone [in a one-size-fits-all society].
Liam would probably be alive today if he'd had the treatment available at the time. Now he's dead. The parents are not happy about him being dead. Another child is dead due to Vitamin B12 deficiency due to a religious wacko mother [she's now in prison] and father [him too]. The doctors probably mishandled the situation, causing the parents to run for it, ignorantly thinking they knew better with "Alternative Natural Herbal Magnetic" drivel.
The Alternative Mystics are more like Nazis than the doctors, because the Mystics are evil and ignorant liars, charlatans, greedy crooks and heartless frauds, deceiving the gullible, like any common cult leader, into parting with their money and their lives.
Liam is dead and so is the other child because of mysticism. Our son and a daughter are alive because of medical treatments [stone age though they are - progress is slow; hacking out tumours, cyclophosphamide, adriamycin, toxic plant juice and Prednisone then DNA-smashing radiation, are rough as guts as a way of killing cancer cells but better than mysticism or nothing.]
The USA should defend patents in African and other poor countries, where the current idea is to steal intellectual property from the inventors. The funding of medicine requires profits. Stealing from companies won't be good.
