article about MMS in China, too long to translate but raised all kinds of questions. May be mightylakers can take a look and comment.

Here are some of the highlights:

1. is MMS worth a few thousand yuan for a new handset plus .90 yuan per message? no one can really tell now but it may be controlling the destiny future handset development.

2. (this is something that I am not clear on) - NOK supposedly had some type of a lock on this MMS thing but lost it. Previously, NOK claimed that 50% of all their handsets would be MMS by yearend and 100% next year. Why did Nok lose? They apparently bid 60 to 70 milllion yuan plus additional fees as the network and the subscriber base expand. This is far from China Mobile's target price of 20 million yuan. ERICY supposedly not only was more reasonable but it also included 2 years of network support. Huawei was speculated as doing it free as an entry to market. (what are they talking about here? the fee for the software?)

3. nokia appeared to be placing a big bet on MMS, going after the grail. Late August, Nokia dragged over 60 reporters to Yunan and gave 20 of them free 7650 demos. As of Sept 11, Nok started running 60 seconds long ads. Nokia's daily TV ad is estimated at 400K yuan. Per reliable sources, nokia plans to run this through yr end at a cost of 40 million yuan.

4. MOT, on the other hand, is sitting on the sidelines, after being stung by WAP badly a few years ago.

5. MMS is not proprietary. Unicom is getting ready to launch by next year.

6. since there are no current standard. ALL MMS handsets are designed by individual manufacturers so MMS only works when using handsets from the same manufacturer. could this be true?

7. MMS handset prices and schedule:

Sony/ERICY T68ie - first on market since Aug 3,220 yuan plus 2,000 yuan for camera.

Nokia 7650 - introduced late Aug for 6,800 yuan.

Nokia 7210 - Oct (no price)

Nokia 3650 (the simplified 7650) - early 2003 and around 5,000 yuan.

Nokia 3530 - by year end 1,400 to 1,900 yuan.
