I have decided that there are certain people here on SI who delight in intentionally disrupting instead of participating in intelligent discourse. I find it's better to ignore them than engage with them, because one's own goals are so different from theirs that discourse is impossible.

I don't think your reputation will suffer at all from being attacked by some of these people. In fact, I find my own reputation enhanced by the fact of a few people who have declared themselves my enemies. Sometimes it is every bit as important to have the right enemies as the right friends.
