This from TTPCom is a bit dated (and I don't buy there comments about QoS) but it addresses this ...

Great presentation....exactly what I was looking for.

An entirely new transmit path in the handset AND an order of magnitude greater MIPS required for the handset? They are going to have their work cut out for them.

Doesnt it bother you when you read the various comments about the "complexity" of GPRS? It was sold as the relatively easy upgrade path for GSM....just as EDGE is now being sold. That is why I think carriers are going to wait to actually see data traffic materialize before spending their precious capex on EDGE.

In any case, EDGE would be an absolute goldmine for TI. It would provide a great transition if W-CDMA takes longer than they are currently projecting.

If you have a decent amount of patience, help me overcome my impatience waiting for a decent tri-mode to go on Verizon's shelves with a sensibly priced data plan, and a packet data service I would be willing to pay a sensible price for.

I suppose I could buy the data kit for my wife's KYO 2235, but that phone, which is probably the single largest selling 1xRTT model in the world (at least the most widely stocked) outside of Korea and Japan is clearly a 2nd generation phone, and a pretty good example of what is not one of the "new generation" phones I was referring to.

Well....3 new full color handsets are due out by Christmas. As for sensible price plans, we'll have to wait and see what Verizon's response is to PCS's pricing plan.

Those three dont inlcude the 7135, i500 or i700 that should all be out the in the next couple of months. Handset availability for CDMA carriers is not among my big worries.

If you really want to talk about being patient....where the hell are the location-based services??? These are the only application that I think are guaranteed to be popular....and still not one application has been launched (or even announced!).
