OT Tom,
People want to use excuses to justify their own views of people who are of a different religious or race.
Racism seems to be a natural feeling; it seems even in educated societies like the USA, it can't be avoided.

Racism is there just waiting for an excuse to come to the surface. Now the excuse is there. It has happened before over and over again in history and there seems to be nothing new here.

I seriously doubt that US citizens of Arab background have any kind of high crime rate. My observation is that most are educated professionals or businessmen....who at this time may be objects of hatred or suspicion.

When/IF people start getting labelled as good or evil based upon their religion, that would be a troubling sign. Hopefully, these kinds of emotions are temporary.
I would also point out that western society, including the US, is the most tolerant in the world. The danger is simply that it starts going backwards.
