Xilinx Extends Line of Automotive Chips With Two New Intelligent Devices

Monday October 21, 7:30 am ET

Company Expands IQ Solutions Offerings With Spartan-II FPGAs And CoolRunner CPLDs

DETROIT, Oct. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Xilinx, Inc., (Nasdaq: XLNX - News) today announced two new additions to its IQ Solutions line of intelligent programmable chips, developed specifically for the automotive telematics market. Xilinx IQ Solutions are now available for the company's lowest cost Spartan-II FPGA series and its lowest power CoolRunner CPLDs. The IQ Solutions line, announced earlier this year, is designed specifically for architecting automotive intelligence and infotainment products into the cabin of the automobile at extended operating temperatures. The new IQ solutions not only provide faster time-to-market for vehicle manufacturers, consumers will benefit from the reconfigurable nature of the chips as well. The programmable chips can be upgraded even after the vehicle has left the dealership.

"By extending our range of IQ Solutions to include our lowest cost and lowest power devices, Xilinx can address the increasing needs of our automotive customer base and further penetrate the growing telematics market," said Sandeep Vij, vice president of worldwide marketing at Xilinx.

By extending the range to include Spartan-II FPGAs, it allows use of the industry's leading MicroBlaze(TM) processor, the world's fastest 32-bit soft processor core for FPGAs. Running at 65 MHz, and delivering 43 DMIPs on the Spartan-II FPGA, the Xilinx MicroBlaze processor delivers a true 32-bit instruction and data bus critical for building complex systems for the automotive industry. And because MicroBlaze is a software-based IP core, it is highly portable and does not suffer from obsolescence like traditional microprocessors. The automotive designer can now protect many man-years of legacy code and eliminate cost re-designs typically associated with processor obsolescence.

By adding the ultra low power CoolRunner CPLDs to the IQ Solutions line, automotive designers can benefit from the industry's highest performance and ultra low power CPLD. The next generation of cars will employ "always on" systems to monitor the health of the car and allow for more sophisticated security systems. Silicon devices used in these monitoring systems need to be powered from the car battery to operate even when the car is switched off. CoolRunner CPLDs are ideal for such applications, as every device across the range consumes less than 100uA at standby.

About the Xilinx IQ Product Range

Xilinx IQ Solutions provide vehicle manufacturers with the time-to-market advantages enjoyed by the consumer product manufacturers for many years. Manufacturers can stock one general-purpose device in lieu of many application specific parts, thus reducing inventory overhead. And because the chips are reprogrammable at any point throughout the design cycle, automotive engineers can quickly and easily integrate the latest entertainment and navigation systems. Xilinx IQ includes a full range of CPLD and FPGA programmable solutions characterized for operation from -40 degrees C up to 125 degrees C chip temperatures.
