Unless this cat has it wrong, this is a slightly more detailed take on the BMW in-car display:

The company's in-car project system uses the same light-scanning technology as the Nomad, Microvision's head-worn personal display device. It combines red, green and blue light sources to form a laser image that is reflected off a tiny, vibrating mirror mounted on a silicon chip. The image is then scanned through an optical combiner.
From there, it is reflected off a small screen mounted to the back of the front seat and beamed to the back of the viewer's retina.
As a result, the image seems to float in front of the viewer's eyes, and it doesn't bother anyone else.
"If you were sitting next to someone watching this, you wouldn't see the image
," [MVIS Comm. Dir.] Nichols said.
The system's microprojector is built into the interior ceiling of the car, and the viewer can use door-mounted switches to adjust the position of the reflecting screen.
