I use Opera as a primary browser (similar to IE but I like it's layout more) and IE as a backup. If I get the error message you described, I just call up the other browser to see if it's the network or the application. A few pages only display correctly with IE so it is worth having it around for the odd page now and then.

Anyway, sorry about your problems -- I hate to add anything to my system any more because of the lost weekends it can create.
