'People were burned alive inside my bus'
DANIEL BEN-TAL
Oct. 22, 2002
For the staff of Hillel Yaffe Hospital in Hadera, Monday night's scene was ominously familiar. As most of the victims of the bombing on the Wadi Ara road were rushed in, teams of doctors and nurses dealt with the wounded, while worried families and friends clamored for information.
"Unfortunately, the hospital is used to dealing with such incidents, and we were ready for both the wounded and trauma victims," said Anat Baram, the hospital's spokeswoman.
On the third floor, Yiftah Mental, 19, of Moshav Maor, reflected on his near brush with death. "My mother dropped me off at the [Karkur] junction and I saw the bus approaching, so I ran to the stop. I had one foot on the step of the bus when the explosion threw me at least five meters in the air. My backpack buffered my fall it probably saved me from serious injury.
"Then I saw my mother running toward me, shouting 'Yiftah, Yiftah.' She was in greater shock than me. I took her aside, because she shouldn't see such things people were screaming, trying to jump out of the bus's windows as it burned. All around us was hysteria."
Mental, who was hospitalized with burns to his arms, back, and foot, sported a T-shirt saying "It won't happen to me." He remains adamant in his desire to join an elite commando unit upon his induction into the IDF next month. "Life goes on and I'll have to put this behind me."
"The only thought I had was that I've lost my child," said his mother, Ruth. "There is no way to prepare for something like this. At least now I'll worry less when he's in the army, because I've experienced that fear once."
"I cannot forget what I saw today people were burned alive inside my bus," said driver Haim Avraham, who escaped with light wounds. [snip]
