Hmmm... maybe if Israel wasn't victimizing Palestinians on a daily basis, maybe if the settlers were not stealing land, murdering Palestinian farmers and stealing their property, well, maybe the PIJ would not have as many recruits for their suicide attacks? What do you think?
No doubt there is the hard core in PIJ, Hamas etc. that stands for nothing but hate, and dreams of eradicating Israel. But that's just it - I'd rather confine that to the inevitable hard core - and deprive them of the many, many recruits to their cause who come to the PIJ and Hamas etc., because they see them as the only effective liberation fighters - the recruits who see the PA as ineffective. That the PA has been thus rendered less attractive is the wonderful job of the right-wing dingbats in charge of Israeli policy who are obsessed with destroying Arafat and leaving only the PIJ and Hamas as the alternatives - great job, Sharon & co! Oh well, the years of Israel supporting Hamas and the Islamicists in a mad bid to destroy the secular PA has succeeded only too well. The PA is dead as a political force - the force of moderation and secularism and partners in a peace process - killed by Israeli righ-wing nutjobs (who also killed Rabin). The ones left now are the Hamas and the PIJ - Israeli creations.
And thus, the secular moderates on both sides have been pushed aside or assasinated. Rabin - the last great Israeli leader, and Arafat now a helpless ineffective prisoner surrounded by Sharon's tanks. Yep, the extremists on both sides are in charge now. Suicidal policies got us there, and a lot of blood will have to flow on both sides for people to wake up.
Remove the root cause. Give back the stolen land. Unconditionally. Defend internationally legitimate pre-67 borders. Injustice will not stand. |
