SGI Names New Member to Its Board of Directors


Dr. Lewis S. Edelheit, Former Senior Vice President of Corporate Research
And Development for General Electric Company



MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., Oct. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- SGI (NYSE: SGI) today announced that Dr. Lewis S. Edelheit will join its board of directors. Dr. Edelheit, 60, has substantial experience in developing technologies in the areas of the sciences and manufacturing for companies including General Electric Company, Quantum Medical Systems and Siemens Corporation. In December 2001, Edelheit retired from General Electric (GE) following a successful tenure as senior vice president of corporate research and development.
Under his leadership, GE introduced industry-leading medical imaging products such as digital x-ray and advanced ultrasound medical imagers, high-efficiency turbines for power generation, advanced lighting, electronics-based appliances, and weatherable plastics. Other highlights during his tenure include significant advances in high-technology services and Internet applications, e-business initiatives throughout the GE businesses, and the development of new technology centers in Bangalore, India, and Shanghai, China.

Dr. Edelheit began his professional career in 1969 as a physicist at the GE R&D Center where he made significant contributions to the to fast-scan, "fan-beam" computed tomography x-ray systems-helping to pioneer major advances in computed tomography. In 1976, as part of GE Medical Systems in Milwaukee, Wis., he helped move GE's radically new form of computed tomography x-ray scanner quickly to the marketplace. He also served as general manager of engineering and general manager of the Computed Tomography Programs Department.

In 1986, Dr. Edelheit became president and CEO of Quantum Medical Systems, a venture capital-backed company that pioneered color flow ultrasound for vascular imaging. He continued in that position after Quantum was acquired by the Siemens Corporation. He returned to GE in 1991 as manager of the R&D Center's Electronic Systems Research Center and in 1992 assumed leadership of Corporate R&D.

Dr. Edelheit's appointment to SGI's board of directors is effective immediately.

More than 50% of SGI's revenues come from the sciences and manufacturing sectors.

Current members of the SGI board are: C. Richard Kramlich, a principal in the venture capital firm New Enterprise Associates; James A. McDivitt, the former astronaut and senior vice president of government relations and international at Rockwell International Corporation; Arthur L. Money, former assistant secretary of defense; Charles A. Steinberg, former president of the Broadcast and Professional Company of Sony Electronics, Inc.; and Dr. Robert M. White, director of the Data Storage Systems Center at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU).
