Alcatel Selects Carleton University as First Canadian
Research Partner; Partnership to Exploit Demonstrated
Excellence in Data Communications, Network Security and
Management

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--OCTOBER 22, 2002 - 10:32 EDT
Alcatel (Paris:CGEP.PA) (NYSE:ALA) today
announced that Carleton University has joined the company's
Research Partner Program, a global initiative designed to foster
technological innovation through strategic research relationships.


Carleton University will work closely with Alcatel's Ottawa
Research & Innovation (R&I) Center, established this year to
leverage the region's recognized leadership in telecommunications
networking.

"Alcatel continues to invest in research and development that our
customers need," said Zlatko Krstulich, chief technology officer,
Alcatel Canada and Ottawa R&I director. "Working in partnership
with Carleton University, we expect to contribute significantly to
the development of breakthrough technologies or product concepts
that contribute to the Alcatel portfolio."

Carleton joins a prestigious list of eight other academic
institutions who are members of the Alcatel Research Partner
Program. They include: Microelectronics Center of North Carolina
(MCNC), Sarnoff Institute, and University of Texas, Dallas (UTD)
in the United States; Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique
(CNRS), Institut National de Recherche en Informatique et en
Automatique (INRIA), Groupe des Ecoles de Telecom (GET),
Heinrich-Hertz Institut (HHI), and University of Stuttgart in
Europe.
