The 1997 Asian financial crisis highlighted the problems in the Vietnamese economy but, rather than prompting reform, reaffirmed the government's belief that shifting to a market oriented economy leads to disaster.

Karen.. what's your goal here... to convince us that Vietnam has a better economic system than the western industrialized world??

That their economic progress hasn't occurred as a result of the US permitting them to sell their goods into our markets??

Think about it Karen... I'm sorry if I'm being rude... but just think about the chronology here...

Vietnam was literally a stagnant economy until the collapse of the Soviet Union (and the end of economic subsidies from Moscow).. The only recourse Hanoi had was to re-open economic ties with the United States and other western nations in order to delay the same thing happening to them.

The US trade embargo was not lifted until 1994... so it's not surprising that the greatest period of growth has occurred AFTER that.

So let's not spew BS here Karen.. Vietnam has increased its trade to the US by ten fold since 1994 and 1998.. And lord knows how much trade has increased since then since I can't find a suitable chart of data.

Can you still say that they would be better off without the US buying their products??

Maybe we should embargo all foreign goods so that the rest of the world will be better off??

Do you concur??
