Re: "Democrats have been unable to cash in on what polls show is widespread anxiety about the economy and turn the national debate to their bread-and-butter issues of jobs, Social Security and health care."

I agree 100%. The Democrats have done a POOR job of spreading the word in these areas, primarily because they've been too concerned with Bush's popularity rating. Main problem is the Democrats lack a single strong spokesman. Of all the Democratic leaders who have been hammering on the above issues, the one that has been the most vocal is Daschle. The Dems need more people of authority like him speaking out.

Dick Morris on Insanity and Colmes last night speculated the Dems would do OK on 11-5 because: (1) Iraq is disappearing from most people's radar screens; (2) recent polls that show Dems gaining ground; (3) the late "pop" that we saw in November two years ago in which so-called Democratic independents at the last minute decide to go with the Democratic candidates.

On the other hand, if the Republicans would gain control of the Senate 50-49-1` or even 51-48-1, that wouldn't surprise me.

Yes, the House is probably out of reach for the Democrats at this time. House races often are more difficult to oust an incumbent than Senate races ... at least in recent years.
