since the holidays would postpone most mid quarter warnings

that's quite an assumption. my guess is there is a continuous stream of negative news through the holidays. You have retail sales, jobless numbers, layoff news, home sales, and various other data pretty much on a regular basis. you will also have companies fessing up all quarter that business sucks.
