The comparison highlighted correctly the most important technological elements of the two platforms. I am very pessimistic that Microsoft can deliver or even can comprehend the complexity of designing yet another UNIVERSAL IL! Microsoft record speaks for itself. Microsoft does NOT have enough talent or experience to design a UNIVERSAL IL that can address multi-language, multi-network-protocol, multi-platform, and multi-OS requirements. Having 10 years experience in building compilers, linkers, IDEs and spending about 7 years with OMG, you all remember the OMG IDL, ORB and OMA, I am really puzzled how Microsoft is going to reinvent yet another “Java-like” byte code or “IDL-like language binding” while so far they could not (although most idea is stolen from MAC OS and Unix) produce a decent operating system. The bains of industry, while working together, could afford to produce technologies like CORBA and J2EE all trying to address the SAME problem. Well, MS wants to do it all but single handedly.

The OMG language binding process included feed back from a very large percentage of compiler, linker, network, and OS experts in the industry. Microsoft could have filled in for the %1 of the effort and they had the IL done few years ago! I am interested to see where the MS IL project will end?!

Oh by the way I am not a .NET programmer and never will be, I build real enterprise systems using J2EE as well as CORBA.
