Chirac was on Euronews this morning, saying something like, "The US is not always right. We are for disarmement of Iraq but war is going to be the absolute last resort."

Such an ultimatum will at least force France and Russia to declare whose side they're really on. As it stands now they can have it both ways, pretending that they are friends of the U.S., while working behind the scenes to protect Saddam by strangling any weapons inspections in delay and diplomatic excuses.

This is hardly the intellectual depth I would expect from WSJ. Just because most European countries (and even the British public, from what I hear) still possess the sanity to view war as the last resort and are not eager to jump in line behind the trigger-happy US administration, they can hardly be called "on the side of Saddam".
