Intersil Sampling PRISM Duette - World's First Two-Chip Dual-Band WLAN Solution Optimized for 802.11a, b and g Standards Wednesday October 23, 8:03 am ET
PRISM Duette(TM) Performance Surpasses All Other 802.11a, b, g and Dual-Band WLAN Solutions; Intersil Will Demonstrate PRISM Duette's Unique Capabilities by Streaming HDTV Video at COMDEX
IRVINE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 23, 2002-- Intersil Corporation (Nasdaq:ISIL - News), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog and wireless networking solutions, today announced that it is now sampling PRISM Duette, its dual-band Wireless Local Area Networking (WLAN) chip set that unites the IEEE 802.11a, 802.11b & 802.11g standards into a highly integrated two-chip solution. Intersil will demonstrate the exceptional capabilities of PRISM Duette by wirelessly streaming HDTV video at 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz at a reception for customers, media and analysts at COMDEX in November. PRISM Duette delivers seamless compatibility for WLANs operating in both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands and is capable of transmitting high-speed video, voice and data at speeds up to 54 million bits per second (Mbps) while remaining 100 percent backward compatible to the existing installed base of over 30 million Wi-Fi (802.11b) systems worldwide. PRISM Duette will be 100 percent standards-compliant and provides the ideal 802.11a, b, g, dual-band WLAN solution. Initial comparison testing reveals that PRISM Duette consistently provides twice the range and throughput for currently marketed 802.11a products and over three times the throughput of 802.11b+ products.
"Wireless networking is continuing its strong growth and is rapidly becoming mainstream. Our PRISM Duette solution will address the needs of the mobile user who can now connect to virtually any flavor of Wi-Fi infrastructure, the consumer who can stream multimedia and get whole home coverage, and in the workplace where dense user environments can exist," said Larry Ciaccia, vice president and general manager for Intersil's Wireless Products Group. "By leveraging our years of experience with 5 GHz and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi we have developed a solution that will bring unique value to our customers and end consumers."
Intersil has leveraged over five years of WLAN innovation and IC integration in creating PRISM Duette, a unique two-chip solution that will enable seamless mobility between radios operating in the 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. The innovative two-chip solution features a dual-band (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) ZIF chip coupled to an integrated Baseband Processor and Medium Access Controller (BBP/MAC). ZIF architecture avoids the use of an intermediate frequency and the associated components hence reducing size and cost.
The BBP/MAC integrates dual-band OFDM-based (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) and CCK technology to communicate with both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz WLAN devices. The adoption of OFDM for use in the 2.4 GHz band is a significant milestone in the ongoing evolution of IEEE 802.11 WLAN technology. IEEE 802.11g will offer data rates up to 54 Mbps while supporting full backward compatibility with the wildly popular 802.11b standard. In addition, 802.11g is a perfect complement to 802.11a technology. Both 802.11a and 802.11g use a common high rate modulation scheme. Due to the availability of more spectrum in the 5 GHz bands, 802.11a systems will support a least eight non-overlapping channels, thus supporting a higher user density and easier network scalability. In comparison, 802.11g devices will offer consumers an advantage in terms of range due to operation at a lower frequency as well as backward compatibility with legacy 802.11b equipment.
"PRISM Duette enables a wide range of broadband WLAN applications and provides the most compelling solution for our customers to addresses a broad spectrum of products aimed at the enterprise, home or public access," commented Ciaccia.
Intersil + Elantec Means More for Our Customers
Intersil Corporation is a global semiconductor leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog and wireless networking solutions. The acquisition of Elantec Semiconductor, Inc., expanded Intersil's product portfolios to address four fast growing markets - flat panel displays, optical storage (CD and DVD recordable), power management and wireless networking. Intersil brings added customer value in providing complete silicon, software and reference design solutions to new products that enhance the computing experience for people wherever they live, work or travel.
