Christine,

I meant we're both fish, to the day.

>>Oh, dear, my sense of lack of connection is a CLICHE!! How
common!! I think I will try to have something more exotic next time!!!<<

I didn't mean to insult your feeling of lack of connection, simply that it is common in our society. The cliche is that it is tied to consumerism--besides, even if it is a cliche it can still be valid.
While I can beleive that being affluent doesn't make people happy it is also likely that being poor doesn't make anyone all that happy either. It's just difficult to be happy--in fact it's difficult to know what happiness is, at least in a context that can be evaluated (like in a survey).

I wasn't trying to say that a simpler life is illiterate or inferior. What I'm trying to say is that in (economic) evolution, it seems that a certain amount of industrialization is required to achieve the basic wealth to provide for basic needs. This industrialization has its problems and benefits. It's a lot easier to revert to a "simpler" lifestyle once that level has been attained. I was really comparing our society to very poor ones lacking most of the infrastructure we posess. These are the extremes, in reality there are many ways to live as you pointed out. At some point there may be better balanced ways to achieve economic development--but I think that is a way off in the future.
