You know, I'm on record as saying I *am* one of those people who feels the police should release everything they have and let the chips fall where they may. So it's not like I'm here to support the way the police have handled things. I, do, however, think they do truly think they are following proper and prudent police procedure, not trying to pull the wool over our eyes.

In the "old" days (pre sophisticated forensics, like DNA analysis), I could see some merit in keeping things quiet in the hope of nabbing someone who "knows things only the killer would know." But even that was highly speculative. For example, look no further than those kids arrested for the Central Park jogger murder who described what they did in vivid detail "only the killers would know." Turns out not only did their stories not match, but the police didn't know much at all about a crime no one even witnessed. If not for a confession and a DNA match from the real mugger, those guys would still be in jail.
