christine - my grandmother was a crack shot with a 20gauge shotgun. used to shoot 'em right thru the head. my older sisters got to chase them around and try and ring their necks, i quess i shouldn't say 'got to'; they didn't like it.<g> also, they were still bathing in those big buckets outside. by the time i can remember, there was indoor plumbing and chickens only for eggs. the life and food are great. and though i love the land, this is a tough place to live. if i could somehow transport it, say maybe to the russian river area, t'would be paradise. maybe a few more seasons will change things. i never particularly experienced seasons before coming back here to stay(i'd only stayed for a few months at a time before). and it's really grown on me. and with the land, you're job changes as the year does and part of every season is spent getting ready for the next. i haven't yet been fully prepared for a season before it arrived. but i am getting closer. i'll ask about a good way to cook beans without ham hocks or bacon. i'm not the cook...<g> i enjoy you're rambling writing, hope you continue. jp
