SAN JOSE--Semiconductors have become a non-profit industry--again. For the first time since 1997, semiconductor companies in total recorded a net loss in 2001--with more red ink expected for 2002, according to a study from VLSI Research Inc. released here today.

A study of pre-tax earnings by device type for several semiconductor manufacturers revealed an average profit of $11 billion per year from the periods of 1997 thru 2002, according to VLSI, a market research firm in San Jose.

Net earnings peaked in 2000, but went into negative territory in 2001. And preliminary data indicates that companies will experience more losses in 2002, according to the firm.

The study also showed that the DRAM sector lost, on average, $842 million a year during 1997-2002. In contrast, the MPU segment made on average, $5.3 billion a year of profit during that time period, the study said.
