I give Clinton credit for being on the right side of those issues, too.

Smoot-Hawley is not a propos. There is nothing like so broad a protectionist regime today. What happened was that complaints about dumping and other predatory trade practices were given more weight than I believe appropriate, in a handful of cases. It was an intermixture of "fair trade" arguments, which still have some appeal, even to conservatives, and political expediency.

More important examples of the renunciation of principle were when Leiberman went from opposing late term abortion and favoring vouchers, to the opposite positions, to become vice- president. Al Gore himself started out pro- life, until he realized it would hamper his career.

And, again, the answer is "current".......
