Most religions I am familiar with have some sort of "us vs. them" component. Modern Islamic societies seem to carry it pretty far, though, banning (or worse) most other forms of religious expression. Christianity had its issues with intolerance in the past, but the modern version seems to tell you to love everybody but doesn't promise afterlife rewards to the others. A less virulent form of divisiveness, perhaps, but not quite a bridge for everybody to walk across to the Promised Land.

It's not hard to see why John Lennon went out of his way to include religion in this verse:

Imagine there's no countries,
It isnt hard to do,
Nothing to kill or die for,
No religion too,
Imagine all the people
living life in peace...
