They say the caller told the priest in Ashland that investigators should check for a crime in Montgomery, this time specifying that he meant Montgomery, Ala... The authorities were baffled. After nine murders in two weeks, they certainly took the sniper seriously. But "why was he telling us this?" an F.B.I. official said today. "Did he want to get caught?"

Why did Muhammad tell authorities this? Well, golly gee, let's put on our thinking caps. Here we have, at the time, a guy who is taking delight in his killings... one who is making extra sure he gets the proper credit for each one. But being just a "local" pest isn't good enough. No, he wants to make it clear he should be feared by everyone. For example, you know that unsolved murder way down in Alabama? That was me! I'm worth at least $10M!

Muhammad obviously didn't think the Alabama killings were any more likely to lead to his capture than the 13 shooting around DC. He obviously thought wrong. He obviously thought the ongoing search for a white van and the arrest of those two immigrants meant the authorities were so clueless that he didn't even have to listen to the news reports which would have alerted him to a nationwide hunt for his car. He truly was a sitting duck as the police pulled a noose around his neck. How fitting, in more ways than one.
