If you were to go back far enough into history, you will see that it was the whites that brought the blacks to this so-called "New World". Does it take too much of a stretch of the imagination to see that, after all, it was the whites that were responsible for all the White-Black problems today?
All that talk about sending "blacks" to where they came from and closing borders to them are just plain knee-jerk reactions that will not contribute an iota to easing tension or solving the problem. But, to be sure, that is music to many ears!
The word "Blacks" as it is used to refer to some people is, IMHO, quite a misnomer. One should not overlook the fact, that over the centuries, especially from the 16th century right up to the end of the Civil War (1861-1865) when slave trading was in earnest, white slave traders regularly fathered "illegitimate" children by black women. And many a then so-called "Darkie" was regularly lynched for having sex with a white woman even though it was consensual sex or sex at her behest or under her wiles.
In the 20th century, there was more general mixing and more and more "black" men had "white" spouses. Just go to Buffalo or New York City and you will see that many a "black" man has a "white" gal clinging to his arm. I believe there are many interesting reasons for this social phenomenon! Your guesses are as good as mine!
To be sure, many a so-called "black" today, no matter his/her place of origin, be it Africa, South America, the Caribbean etc, has not a few "white" genes in him/her. And it was believed that if a black turned out to be smart and/or enterprising, it was because of the white genes in him/her. If this belief is indeed correct, may it be assumed that any particular skills a black man manifests, say, in planning and marksmanship, are attributable to the white genes in him? By the way, Francis Poulenc (1899-1963), an eminent French pianist and famous composer had a black mother! And many outstanding athletes are "blacks".
According to oversimplified Mendel's Laws of Genetics, two half-and-half parents may have a 1-in-4 chance of producing an all-white or an all-black offspring. (In other words, out of 4 children, 1 may be all-white or all-black.) But so much preference is given to "whites" these days that we don't hear about "white" negroes, and so few realise that the "blacks" they so loosely talk about are, in many ways, related to the so-called "whities".
President Clinton, in his support of the blacks, made quite a big deal of the fact that President Jefferson had a "black" woman and several children by her! But no mention was made of President Abraham having had kept a black slave and of his negative thoughts about the "Darkies". |
