We got around all that by designing refrigerators that draw about 100watts, about the same as a light bulb. Our homes are not wired for 220. Makes it a moot point. The 3% of us who own 120v space heaters are not complaining. Our climate does not demand it and our building construction and insulation standards are actually quite good.
